Creative Commons

Creative Commons is a global nonprofit organization that enables sharing and reuse of creativity and knowledge through the provision of free legal tools.

The most well known area for Creative Commons is licensing, even though their work goes beyond copyright licenses. “CC offers other legal and technical tools that also facilitate sharing and discovery of creative works.”

“A Creative Commons (CC) license is one of several public copyright licenses that enable the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted work. A CC license is used when an author wants to give people the right to share, use, and build upon a work that they have created.”

There are 4 basic rights in the CC license:

  •     Attribution (BY)
  •     Share-alike (SA)
  •     Non-commercial (NC)
  •     No Derivative Works (ND)

These rights can be combined to create a license that works best; of which there are only 11 valid combinations and only 6 that are regularly used:

  •     Attribution alone
  •     Attribution + Noncommercial
  •     Attribution + ShareAlike
  •     Attribution + NoDerivatives
  •     Attribution + Noncommercial + ShareAlike
  •     Attribution + Noncommercial + NoDerivatives
